About One century ago, the progressives including the liberalist and socialist argued that the next century would be the Women’s Era. This argument was based on the perception that women have the properties which would generate human evolution and social progress. The concept that women would play an essential part of human evolution and social progress, came into mind in the background of transition from 19th to 20th Century. The crisis of ‘laissez-faire’ which had favored the value such as selfishness, competition, was equated with the crisis of capitalism resulting from economic depression. The value such as selfishness, competition was also equated with men’s properties in Victorian Era. Thus the failure of ‘laissez-faire’ implied the failure of men’s properties. Since then the spirit of the times had changed in the direction of collectivism emphasizing sociality, corporation, altruism. In this atmosphere people paid attention to the women’s social role who possessed these moral properties.
In these context socialist feminist Eliza Burt Gamble theorized about the role of woman in the social progress by reconstruction of the history of human evolution. First, she tried to ‘rewrite’ the evolution theory and she criticized hegemonic dogma of woman’s inferiority to man. And she tried to prove the woman’s superiority to man. Second, she criticized the male bias of evolution theory and anthropology. And then she reconstructed the history of human evolution based on the concept of ‘female selection’. In the perspective of Gamble, although woman embodied the value of future, woman did not exert her social value because of suppression of capitalism. As a corollary, women’s liberation had gained more universal implication not confining to the women but influencing all human beings. The emancipation of women did take a key position in social transformation because if women would liberate then the men and all human who embodied old social values would liberate together.

한 세기 전 자유주의와 사회주의를 포함한 많은 진보주의자들은 20세기가 여성의 시대가 될 것이라 전망했다. 이는 인류의 진화와 사회 진보를 가져올 자질을 여성이 가지고 있다는 인식에 기초했다. 인류의 진화, 사회 진보에서 여성이 중요한 역할을 한다는 생각은 19세기말과 20세기 초의 시대를 배경으로 한다. 공황으로 인한 자본주의의 위기는 이기심, 경쟁과 같은 자유방임 사상이 옹호한 가치의 위기로 인식되었다. 이기심, 경쟁은 동시에 빅토리아 시대 남성의 자질이었다. 따라서 자유방임의 실패는 곧 남성적 특질의 실패를 의미했다. 자유방임의 실패 이후 시대정신이 사회성, 협동, 이타성을 강조하는 집산주의로 전환되었다. 이런 분위기에서 이런 도덕적 자질을 갖는다고 여겨졌던 여성의 사회적 역할이 주목받게 된 것이다.
이런 맥락에서 사회주의 페미니스트 엘리자 버트 갬블은 인류 진화사에 대한 재구성을 통해 사회 진보에서 여성의 역할을 체계화한다. 우선 그녀는 진화론 ‘다시쓰기’를 통해 당대 지배적 담론인 ‘여성의 열등성’이란 견해를 비판하고 ‘여성의 우월성’을 주장한다. 다음으로 그녀는 ‘여성 선택’ 관념에 근거해서 인류 진화사에 대한 진화론과 인류학의 남성편향을 비판하고 여성 중심의 인류 진화사를 재구성한다. 갬블의 시각에서 볼 때 여성은 새로운 시대의 미래적 가치를 체현하지만 자본주의의 여성 억압으로 인해 자신의 사회적 가치를 발휘하지 못했을 뿐이다. 이 논리의 결과 여성해방은 여성에 국한되지 않고 전 인류적인 보편성을 획득한다. 여성의 해방은 사회변혁에서 핵심이며 낡은 가치를 체현한 남성을 포함한 인류를 동시에 해방시키는 것을 의미했던 것이다.
