The objective of this study is to explain the glottalization of Yonaguni Ryukyuan in the framework of Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2002).
High vowels between voiceless obstruents were deleted in Yonaguni Ryukyuan. These vowel deletions led to obstruent sequences. In obstruent sequences, the second obstruent was glottalized and then the first obstruent was deleted. In order to explain this glottalization and obstruent deletion, this paper adopts two markedness constraints POT which demands that a post-obstruent consonant must be tensed, and σ[∗M₁/Obs&∗M₂/Obs which bans obstruent sequences. The interaction between post-obstruent tensing and obstruent deletion resulted in overapplication opacity in Yonaguni Ryukyuan. To explain this overapplication opacity, this paper employs the constraint combinations of Crowhurst & Hewitt (1997), and proposes a If-joined constraint [Ident(c.g.)→Max-C]<SUB>word</SUB> formed by the implicational combination of the two faithfulness constraints Ident(c.g.) and Max-C. By using the If-joined constraint [Ident(c.g.)→ Max-C]<SUB>word</SUB>, which prevents radical harmonic improvement, this paper shows that the overapplication opacity in Yonaguni Ryukyuan can be dealt with Optimality Theory without abandoning parallelism.
