This study began with the intention of exploring how the Vietnam War has been represented in children’s literature. Using the discourse on state power during the Vietnam War, we analyzed the figuration of the war soldiers of the Vietnam War Donghwa of the 1970s.
From this analysis, we confirmed that the dominant discourse on state power is reflected in the images of soldiers in children’s literature. In “국군묘지의 뻐꾸기,” Korean soldiers reminisced about a national sense of debt, and in “개나리의 여행” and “장군의 꿈,” the Korean army was armed with Christian anti-communism sentiment. In “하노이에서 온 아이,” the children of Vietnam were embellished with a desire for hope.
From this analysis, we demonstrated that the discourse on the impact of war on state power was reproduced in the Vietnam War Donghwa.
