This paper starts from the critical view for the Spatiality cause by the encounter of the Korea and the Vietnam. Today, the Korea and the Vietnam have an amicable diplomatic relationship with intercourses in a various area. However, serious problems between them still exist.
The problem is that the Korea sent their military to the Vietnam War. In addition, there are some social issues with international marriages between them. These problems have been discussed in the Korean novels with various viewpoints. Nevertheless, the Vietnam just has been treated as just one of the undeveloped countries at the Southeast Asia. Furthermore, the Vietnam has never been ‘a Subjective Background’ in these novels.
In Hye-kyung’s The Wetland of Memory, a war veteran character has a memory to be sent to the Vietnam War. Moreover, the Vietnamese woman who moved to his town for her marriage has a memory of the Vietnam as her hometown. The main purpose of this paper is on them. By analyzing this novel, the Spatiality of the Vietnam was discovered in the Korean multi-cultural novels. Furthermore, It was found that both the Korean and the Vietnamese have the features of the Subaltern. So, this paper will focus on the Subaltern made by a war and by an immigration with marriage. In conclusion, ‘The Epistemological Violence’ when describing the Subaltern needs to be introspected by our new perspective.
