This study re-reads Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie and August Wilson’s Seven Guitars from a disability studies perspective. It argues first that, in The Glass Menagerie, Laura’s physical disability signifies her cognitive disability, to be more specific, autism spectrum disorder. It also discusses about otherization and normalization of Laura. As for Hedley, the disabled character in Seven Guitars, the study identifies him as a “wise fool” on the basis that his seemingly nonsensical words reveal criticism of and warning against historical and political issues such as the “white plot against blacks.” The study also argues that the often-mentioned concept of “racial madness” tends to cover up the fact that the play is a murder mystery and Hedley is presented as the instrument of death. As a conclusion, the study maintains that the two plays present negative images of the disabled, presenting Laura as a totally impotent person and Hedley as a monster killing people at whim.
