This essay compares Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Guinevere” with William Morris’s “The Defence of Guenevere” in terms of their notions of women’s sexual desire and marital faithfulness. Both Tennyson and Morris can be featured as Medievalists in that they yearned for Medieval era fascinated by the pre-industrial beauty, spiritual priority over material, and organic solidarity of the society. They both, in their poems based on Medieval romance of King Arthur, reflect their concerns regarding issues of their contemporary Victorian society.
Tennyson in his “Guinevere” presents Guinevere’s adultery with Lancelot as the very cause of breakdown of Arthur’s idealism represented by the round table. By describing Guinevere’s body as “a poison” leading to corruption of the whole society in Arthur’s accusation against her, the poem emphasizes the danger of woman’s sexual desire and the importance of the maintenance of marital faithfulness. Morris, on the contrary, considers Guenevere’s sexual desire to be vital energy of life and the consummation of the love of Guinevere and Lancelot to be appreciated. Although both the poets express different notions of women’s sexual desire and marital faithfulness, they represent varying Victorian ideas of the notions: the one tries to protect and reestablish the traditional one, the other signalizes feminism and woman’s individuality.
