The present Study compares Tristram and Iseult’s love in Tennyson’s “The Last Tournament” with that in Robinson’s Tristram. The poets sketched the love of Tristram and Iseult from different perspectives. Tennyson, a representative Victorian poet, portrayed Tristram as a person who leads a natural life free from the traditional ideals, morals, and values. Tristram follows natural law in his love with Iseult, and just as things change, he believes his love depends upon some natural and circumstantial conditions. Robinson, on the other hand, represented Tristram and Iseult’s love as love for itself. By omitting a love potion for their abrupt falling in love and delaying their consummation until they meet at Joyous Gard, Robinson characterized their love as fundamental and justifiable. Through waiting and suffering, their love grows and even overcomes time. Even in the face of death, they feel fulfilled and peaceful. While Tennyson represented their love as earthly and conditional, Robinson portrayed it as permanent and transcendental.
