The purpose of this study is to investigate the Deuteronomist`"s view of “the Man of God” passages(1 Kings 12:33-13:34) as reflected by his whole history. “The Man of God” passages are strange story with many plot reversals. This Prophetic narrative has long confused readers and challenged interpreters. Questions abound about many aspect of the narrative, especially those related to its unity and theme. Thus study addresses these problems through studying this text in three stages.:
First, this study placed this passages back into its deuteronomistic context and showed its function within the immediate and broader setting within Kings. Within its immediate context, 1 Kings 12:25-14:20, “the man of God” passages functions as a pivot between the rise and fall of Jeroboam, explaining how God’s chosen instrument can become God’s enemy. This prophetic narrative allows the Deuteronomist to tell Jeroboam’s story in compacted yet impactful way. Without this short story, the sin of Jeroboam would not have their punch in the rest of Kings, and since the consequences of the rebellion against the word of God are illustrated in the life and death of “the man of God” yet Jeroboam did not repent. After all this Jeroboam did not turn from his sins.
Second, this study separated out the pre-deutronomistic text from its deuteronomistic context in Kings. After excising it deuteronomistic redactions, a unified, understandable story, exhibiting great literary artistry, was left. A prophetic community most likely produced this story during Josiah’s reforming work. Through the twist and turns of the story emerges a singulars themes. From beginning to end the story dwells on a single theme-the fulfillment of the word of the Lord in its appointed time, after it transcends the weakness of its bearer and converts into affirmers those who would violate it. Ultimated, the word of God triumph over every force which opposes it, including a king and his cult, prophets, a lie, wild beast, death and time, and accomplishes its objective.
Third, this study investigated the prophecy story has been introduced here as part of the deuteronomistic revision’s royal focus, updated to associate it with the Josianic Reform. Its adaptation and incorporation into the Deuteronomistic History within this focus of the revision says nothing about the time of its original composition. Dtr revisers working within the royal focus of the revision process can have held both concern, restricting the first to Bethel alone and bringing in the second at the end of the story. It is not uncommon to distribute these concerns over several editorial layers. however, they can come together within the compass of a single focus of revision.
Through the above investigation, this study concludes that “the man of God” passages in the deuteronomistic historian called it, the sin of Jeroboam was eventually led to the fall of the northern kingdom and the exile of its people.
