This thesis attempts to understand Paul’s understanding of the kingdom of God from his situation and perspective through 1 Corinthians. Among Paul"s true letters, 1 Corinthians mentions “the kingdom of God” the most(4:20; 6:9-10[2 times]; 15:24, 50), and it is a letter that can grasp its characteristics relatively clearly. Therefore, this study aims to examine the meaning, focusing on the verses that explicitly use “the kingdom of God” in 1 Corinthians. First, we will look at 15:24-28 and then deal with the rest of the verses, namely 4:20, 6:9-10, 15:50 in turn.
Despite the relatively small frequency of “the kingdom of God” in 1 Corinthians, it shows Paul’s own clear theological perspective and intent. Paul, who experienced the resurrection of Jesus, interprets “the kingdom of God” from a christological point of view. According to him, the present is a period of rule in which Christ, who is resurrected and seated at the right hand of God, and is entrusted with the ruleship from God to conquer all the enemies of God. When the work is finished, Christ will finally hand over the kingdom to God, and the kingdom of God will ultimately be completed. The focus is on the present of the kingdom of God, where Christ, as the Son of God, acts on behalf of God"s sovereignty and conquers all the evil forces that oppose God.
Paul applies these characteristics of the kingdom of God to the ethical counsel of the Corinthians. Christians are beings who are living in a transitional period between “already” and “not yet”: the present reign of Christ, who has been entrusted with God’s full authority, and the ultimate future completion of the kingdom of God. Therefore, those who do not obey Christ’"s present rule cannot inherit the future kingdom of God. In this respect, Paul’s kingdom of God is an important fbasis for ethical exhortations that urge us to live a life worthy of it based on our true Christian identity (indicative). In this respect, Paul’s kingdom of God becomes an important foundation for ethical exhortations that urge us to live a life worthy of it based on our true identity as a Christian.
