Kobo Abe`s short stories “Protective Color” and “Starving Skin” were completed in the same year, and both use the same motif called `protective color`. In addition, clothes, especially uniforms, are treated significantly, and similarities are found in both stories in terms of making use of words and expressions. In particular, the same sentence is used in both works. Despite these similarities, dissertations dealing with these two pieces of work on the same context have not been found so far. Therefore, this paper aims to consider the two works focusing on the `protective color` and the importance of the clothes commonly found in each story. Specifically, we looked at the meaning of the `protective color` described in each work and studied the capitalist system of Japanese society through the lens of class structure and clothing, as well as the transformation from militarism to democracy. In his two books, Abe uses the motif of `protective color` to point out the problems associated with a capitalist system. He also highlights the fact that the underprivileged classes remain at a disadvantage, despite the change of the social system from militarism to democracy. Abe reveals the oppression of society, which uses clothes showing different classifications to suppresses the identity of individuals and forces them to act as a member of a group or unit. Through the portrayal of his characters, Abe suggests that the dichotomy of dominance and subjugation did not disappear, but its form and title merely changed to exploitative and non-exploitative relationships in the post-war, democratic era.
