HBO’s Boardwalk Empire is an American historical TV series. The show’s main character is Enoch Nucky Thompson, Atlantic City’s political boss and racketeer during the Prohibition era. Inspired by Karl Marx’s oft-quoted statement that history repeats itself “first as tragedy, then as farce,” this paper explores how Boardwalk Empire represents the historical repetition of the American dream. Nucky Thompson is an American tragic hero. According to the show’s description of the Thompson character, despite all the economic success and political power, Thompson’s American dream is destined to fail due to his original sin. As it attributes Thompson’s failure to his past, immorality and illegality, the show unwittingly veils the systemic impossibility in achieving the American dream in contemporary America. Marx argued that history returns to us as farce, so we can happily part from it. From this point of view, Boardwalk Empire tells us that we are still prisoners of the American dream.
