In the fourth industrial revolution, the role of secretaries is expanding to be more active and progressive. Such behavior can be described as self-leadership, and thus, self-leadership is important for secretaries. In prior research, self-leadership of secretaries has been proven to have positive influence on organizational effectiveness. However, no specific examples have been confirmed about how self-leadership is employed at work. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to identify how secretaries demonstrate self-leadership at work.
Analysis results on the self-leadership experience of secretaries derived from in-depth interviews confirmed the self-leadership factor structure found in preceding studies. The results are nine behavior-focused strategies, natural reward strategies, and two constructive thought pattern strategies. However, results were not entirely consistent with the self-leadership factor structure in prior research. Furthermore, the use of physical tools, self-development, self-managing, time management and stress management were newly derived in this study. This research confirmed the importance of self-leadership at the workplace. In addition, the self-leadership experience derived in this study could be used as a basis for establishing the self-leadership factor structure for secretaries.
