<Burning> is a movie that contains more questions. These questions arise from the structure of this movie. The structure is largely expressed as a mise－en－abyme and mysterious structure. The narrative becomes more hierarchical and multiple, so the audience becomes less able to understand the film. The audience is not empathic, but thinks about the story of the movie through defamiliarization.
The characters are also problematic. In <Burning>, young men (Jongsoo and Haemi) are in an ‘exclusion and inclusion’ of ‘homo－sacer’. They are in a ‘state of exception’. They are not identified with others, but are thoroughly excluded from them.
Nevertheless, Jongsoo(종수) and Haemi(해미) have still a dream and a desire, but, their dreams and desires are not accepted in reality, yet they cannot give up their dreams and desires. This causes an ‘institutionalized depression’. However, they look for a way to become more independent beyond ‘exceptional state’ and ‘institutionalized depression’. Jongsoo becomes subjective by ‘affect’ and ‘hospitality’, which is related to the possibility of hope that Lee Changdong showed in <Miryang(밀양)> and <Poetry(시)>.
In other words, Jongsoo follows up and understands Haemi’s life after she has disappeared. He receives her hospitably as she is. His novel writing can be the evidence of the hospitality and affection. He became more intense in the path of subjectification by writing novels. This subjectification can be compared to the process of subjectification of Mija(미자) by the writing of poems in the film <Poetry>.
