This article examines the relationships between technological innovation regulation and performance of Small and Medium Enterprises(SMEs) by assessing individual effects of regulations categorized on the basis of each stage of a firm’s innovation activity cycle. The article analyses a survey data of 286 Korean SMEs by employing the 3-step mediated regression analysis. The analysis results indicate that the perceived level of regulatory burden of each technological innovation regulation may affect SMEs’ R&D investment and innovation of product and process as well as the objective and subjective performance of SMEs. The findings of this article imply that regulatory reforms for technological innovation of SME need to take into account the importance and impact of individual regulations in a firm’s business life cycle which are associated with technical innovation and performance of SMEs.
