Immediately after its advent, television has become one of the most influential media in the contemporary era. Meanwhile, television has also altered ways people enjoy spectacles as it diffuses: With others at a street corner or a neighbor’s salle in the early stage of its spread, then with family at home afterwards, and then watching alone by the benefit of recent information technology development. The researchers assumed that such changes have also influenced ways people make and manage relationships with neighbors and family members because television has been bound up with people’s daily life in a close manner. Thus, 12 interviewees were asked to recall their experiences of television use and their relationships with neighbors and family members. We identified five stages of television viewing experience and found that opening private space and communal interchange were the bases of collective viewing; however, spread of family viewing debased community solidarity in return for family bonds.
