The purposes of this paper are two-fold: (i) to investigate discourse-pragmatic functions of the marked word order in English, resulting from such leftward movements as Topicalization, Focalization, Left-Dislocation and Locative Inversion, and (ii) to examine their recognition by English native speakers through a questionnaire with minimal pairs of English sentences of marked and unmarked word order. The results are as follows. The well-known ‘given-before-new’ principle is at work: the information related to the previous discourse or familiar to speakers and hearers tends to be placed sentence-initially. As for the minimal pairs of the sentences, the sentence of the marked word order has been found to have the functions of focussing or emphasizing, promoting a subject, and introducing a scene with a presentational focus with respect to focalization, left-dislocation, and locative inversion, respectively. In case of topicalization, the non-cannonical word order seems to indicate a contrastive focus in one case and a contrastive subject in another.
