Because many online games are offered to players through such platforms as online game portal sites or digital distribution services on mobile devices, it is important to understand what factors influence the success of online games on such platforms. The present study examined factors that influence the success of an online game published on a game portal site with a focus on bandwagon effects, WOM, and the location where information about the game is displayed. Using panel data on 83 online games from Kongregate.com, an online games portal, we found that bandwagon effects, the valence of WOM, and advertising location of a game played important roles for the success of online games.
