This study examined the differences in taste preference, eating behaviors, and dietary habits according to age and the relationship among them in elderly men and women. A total of 408 subjects (105 men, 303 women) aged 65 and over living in Chungcheong-do participated in this study. The subjects were divided into five age groups according to their age at five-year intervals. The salty taste preference was significantly higher in the 70∼74 age group of elderly men than in the 65∼69 age group (p<0.05). The spicy taste preference of elderly women decreased with increasing age (p<0.05). No significant differences in eating behaviors were observed among the age groups, but the decrease in meal intake during the last three months increased significantly with age in elderly men (p<0.05). The dietary habits were also not significantly different according to age in both men and women. In elderly women, the bitter taste preference increased significantly with decreasing meal intake (p<0.05) and the salty taste preference was significantly higher in alcohol drinkers than non-drinkers (p<0.05). These results suggest that the preferences for salty and spicy taste of elderly men and women differ according to their age and the preferences for bitter and salty taste can be related to the change in meal intake and drinking status in elderly women.
