Plants and microbes produce a variety of bioactive compounds showing antimicrobial activity, which can be recognized as an important source of new agrochemicals for the plant disease control. To get a new lead compound for development of global fungicide, we selected strong antifungal natural resources including Vietnam and domestic plant extracts, mushroom, marine fungi and soil microorganisms. And then we studied to isolate antifungal compound, to determined its structure by NMR, MS, and acid-hydrolysis analyses comparison with literature data and to investigate in vitro and in vivo antifungal and antibacterial spectrum. As part of our search for new antifungal agents from natural sources, we found that two plant extracts of Maesa japonica, a domestic plant and Trevesia palmata, a Vietnam plant. Under the quidance of antifungal activity, five novel terpenoid glycosides (MJG1, MJG2, MJG3, MJG4 and MJG5) and a known triterpenoid glycoside (maejaposide A) were isolated from the methanol extract of M. japonica. Two novel triterpeneglycosides (TPG1 and TPG5) and three known triterpene glycosides (macranthoside A, α-hederin, and ilekudinoside D) were isolated from the methanol extract of T. palmata. In addition, we found that the culture broth of mushroom fungus Crinipellis rhizomaticola exhibits promising antifungal activity. Tetraquinane diterpenoids, crinipellin A and new crinipellin (namely, crinipellin I) were isolated from the ethyl acetate extract of C. rhizomaticola. Most of the isolated compounds showed promising antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungi, but TPG1 and crinipellin I showed weak or no activity. Considering the in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of triterpenoid glycosides and crinipellins, our results suggest that M. japonica, T. palmata and C. rhizomaticola can be a useful source to develop new bio-fungicides.
