The feasibility of energy consumption reduction in the linerboard manufacturing process while maintaining the major properties of the product by increasing its ash content was investigated. For this purpose, ground calcium carbonate (GCC 75F) and GCC composite with microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) were chosen as inorganic fillers. The solid content was measured after wet pressing and drying to evaluate the effect of their addition and the change in the physical properties of linerboard with the ash content was also studied. As the ash content increased, the solid content also increased after wet pressing, with no significant difference between using GCC and GCC composite; however, after drying, the solid content was significantly increased at the initial drying stage by the ash content increase, and a solid content obtained was somewhat higher when the GCC composite was added. The bulk of linerboard was slightly reduced as the ash content increased, but there was no significant difference between GCC and GCC composite. The air resistance decreased slightly when the ash content was increased by the addition of GCC. However, when using GCC composites as fillers, the air resistance was increased slightly. The strain change was not significant even though the ash content was increased by 10% and there was no significant difference between GCC and GCC composite. However, the tensile index, the tensile energy absorption, the tear index, the burst index, and the Taber stiffness decreased with increasing the ash content and the strength obtained by using the GCC composite was higher than that by GCC.
