Equity is one of the objectives of highest social value; it not only has an intrinsic importance but also an instrumental one, because it is necessary to achieve other objectives such as development, democracy and social peace. The analysis of income inequality is especially important for Latin America because it is the region with the highest level of inequality in the world. For this reason, the aim of the investigation is to analyze the effect of political institutions on income inequality in Latin America. The article affirms that equity continues to be one of the most imperative ethical commitments in Latin America, and addressing this problem depends upon the improvement of the quality of democracy and the strengthening of the State.
