In this study, we considered the novel Namiya Zakkaten no kiseki using the key words “repay the favor.”
Those who use the words “repay the favor” in Namiya Zakkaten no kiseki sent three young men a letter of consultation. They try to “repay the favor” to their lovers, others, distant relatives, and consultants, conveying a debt. This contrasts with those who consulted the elderly Namiya with grace from their parents.
Those who consulted with the young men forgive “repay the favor.” However, as is evident from the words of Harumi, “I want to save many people from now on,” “repay the favor” develops into “giving grace.” People who seem to have no connection with each other are connected to a child care facility called “Kankouen.” Where the background of the “Kankouen” is described, we can see the word “return.”
It is not an exaggeration to say that this work belongs to a genealogy of social mystery novels in disaster literature. It is said that it illuminates “repay the favor” which is a concept that has supported modern, human ties in “the innocent era” in which disasters and human connections are fading. Thus “repay the favor,” which began from the personal dimension, is extended to “giving grace” and to the social “return.”
