Various attempts were made in the arts with the arrival of 20th-century modernism. Among these artistic attempts were those that focused on breaking away from sight-centered art to include other senses. However, academic research and art projects dealing with other senses, except for hearing, have been scarce. The recently emerged field of media art focuses on interaction between art and audience and lends itself to highlighting the importance of senses beyond the visual, especially the sense of touch. Therefore, this paper explores the philosophical background of how the sense of touch has been perceived and analyzes cases of modern art projects featuring the sense of touch to consider ways to integrate the sense of touch with media art.
