After the fall of Silla(新羅), the royalty and nobility of Silla were resettled in Kaegyeong(開京) and became the bureaucrats of Goryeo(高麗) or remained in Gyeongju(慶州). Their status was classified by their strengths, while being raised and dropped depending on political and social changes. Of course, they were claim to able the “Silla origin consciousness(新羅 出自意識)”. the cultural influence of Silla, which traditionally descended, did not disappear. But, until the 11th century, the ruling class of Goryeo did not boast much of their ancestors, so it was quite rare for the descendants of Silla to reveal it.
In the 12th century, the Silla origin consciousness began to attract attention from some ruling class of Goryeo who used Silla-style family name. It was a result of a combination of self-identity as a clan(門閥) who settled in Goryeo. Such movements were possible because there were the households of the Silla royal or noble families that led to the clan. However, this was the only means of decorating himself by emphasizing that his genealogy that to Shila’s royalty or nobility, and it was expressed by a part of the clan.
After the late 12th century, Silla origin consciousness could still be the pride of the bureaucracy over the generations. But, in the 13th and 14th centuries, the new generation of bureaucrats also showed a connection to the ancestor of Silla. This was in accordance with the needs of the ruling class. At that time, there were a great change in the Goryeo class society such as the entry of people with lower status into central political arena. Then, introduction of neo-confucianism has affected many of that phenomenon.
It is important to point out the fact that some ruling class was descendants of Silla over almost the entire period of Goryeo were purely due to the needs of the Goryeo rulers. Soon, “Silla origin consciousness” was a means to establish self-identity as Goryeo rulers. However, even though a man who was a high official in Goryeo was actually an ancestor of Silla, he was not a real Silla person. He is a Goryeo person.
