As the epicenter of social exposure, criticism, corruptions, hypocrisy, desire for social success, and so on, the scene of balls, masquerades and salons in the early 19th century Russian literature is an important topos, when it comes to their function, thematic structure, and poetic role in the texts. Following the first study of this serialized theme done in other journal, the focus of the present paper deals with the major works such as Lermontov’s Masquerade (1836) and Princess Ligovskaia (1836), Odoevsky’s Russian Nights (1844), and Karolina Pavlova’s The Dual Life (1848). From the Romantist to Realist time, those four texts exert diverse pictures of the balls, masquerades, and salons, in which the protagonists express their identity, society, higher class, love affairs, and spiritual monologues, as well. As discussed earlier in other study, we are able to find some representative scenes of the motifs under consideration like this: first, they function as an explosive place for satire and criticism on their society, particularly spiritual emptiness and illness. Second, as an antipode against the holy mission given to the intellectuals of the time, the higher society’s mode and meeting place are depicted as totally exotic and non-Russian soil. For these reasons, this paper consequently argues that the balls, masquerades, and salons are serious obstacle for the noble class to overcome their mental illness and non-Russian cultural elements, rather representing most of negative atmospheres, before the productive and democratic literary salons appeared in the middle of the 19th century Russian literature.
