This study was conducted to determine the vegetable seed preferences and purchase practices of farmers in the provinces of Laguna and Quezon, Philippines as well as analyze the factors considered by farmers in choosing the seed variety or varieties they preferred and purchased. Using a survey of 100 farmers and descriptive statistics, results showed that the East -West Seed Company brands are the highly preferred seeds of farmers for almost all the vegetable crops planted in Laguna and Quezon province. Purchase practices of farmers include buying vegetable seeds one to two weeks earlier than the start of the cropping season because agri-supply stores increase prices just as the planting season begins. As for the factors considered by farmers in choosing seed varieties, physiological factors such as high-yielding ability and market preference are the two attributes highly considered by the farmers while the ability of seeds to be stored was the least considered factor. On the other hand, the social factor which greatly affects vegetable purchase practices of farmers is the recommended varieties of their fellow farmers. Meanwhile, the availability of seed varieties in agri-stores located in their respective areas was least considered by the farmers. The research findings provide useful information for strategic choices available to vegetable seed producers/retailers including the agri-supply stores in both areas.
