This paper focuses on the process of the ‘half-talk shift’, the dropping of the politeness particle -yo in discourse that involves a newly established relationship. This phenomenon is very common in Korean discourse. It can be recognized as a token of establishing a more intimate relationship. Yet, at the same time when it is used inappropriately, it can be perceived as inappropriate or offensive. Therefore, it is often hard even for native speakers to decide whether to shift into half-talk or not. In the literature, it is usually described that age and social status are the key factors in half-talk shift (Lee 2012; Yeon and Brown 2011). Simply, it is stated that people with old age or higher social status use half-talk to their juniors. In this paper, using interviews, online analysis, newspaper analysis, and a large-scale survey, we aim to re-explore the functions of speech styles in Korean by showing how half-talk is perceived by native Korean speakers. We also aim to explore whether half-talk shift is used differently in workplace and school settings, whether age and gender play any role in deciding the appropriateness of half-talk shift, and what role negotiation has in half-talk shift.
