This study identified latent profiles of adaptation based on contextual factors and psychological outcomes among multicultural adolescents in Korea. Questionnaire data from the first wave of the Pane l Surve y on K ore an Multicultural Y outh A djustment ( PKMYA I) were analyzed. The sample consisted of 358 fifth- and sixth-grade adolescents born in Korea to Korean fathers and “marriage migrant” mothers. The analytic models used a latent profile analysis based on four factors to characterize contexts outside of family life (acculturation stress, peer discrimination, teachers’ multicultural attitudes, and school multicultural climate), plus the two psychological outcomes of depression and life satisfaction. The best fitting model identified three types of adaptation. (1) the Optimal Adaptation Type (68%) was characte rize d by l ow c onte xtual risk a nd p ositive p sychological outcome; (2) the Moderately Vulnerable Adaptation Type (21%) showed a moderate level of contextual risk but negative psychological outcome; (3) the Pseudo Resilient Adaptation Type (11%) was unique, with the highest level of contextual risk but a relatively moderate level of positive psychological outcome. This study developed the concept of adaptation by using a person-centered approach to identify distinct latent profiles among multicultural adolescents in Korea.
