The Argentine crisis of 2001 not only had a huge socio-economic and psychological impact on the society, but also strongly affected the Korean migrant community. It led in the first instance, to the re-emigration of half of its population, which implied a breakdown or inflection in both the social life of the community and the productive chain of its ethnic enclave. The ethnic economy, linked dominantly to the garment industry, also underwent a structural and locational transformation, responding to the changes brought by the crisis in the process of economic and social recovery.
In that sense, this paper explores the consequences of the crisis in the community in terms of the spaces and everyday practices, and it examines how the ethnic enclave operated as a facilitator in reconsolidating the collective identity as well as the co-ethnic relations in the migrant community through generations due to the social capital.
However, in comparison with the old enclave known as Baek-ku, the newly constructed ethnic enclave Ave exhibits different characteristics in the spatial configuration, in which the 1.5 and second generations play a key role. In this respect, the paper analyses the landscapes of theseplaces where the ethnic subjectivity and social identity are formed, which allows this paper to observe various layers of interactions within and across national and cultural boundaries, as well as the transnational networks in the global context.
