The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the peer and interpersonal relationships on school violence in middle school. The participants were middle school students who were from three different schools in ‘J’ province area in Korea. The total of 277 students were filled out a survey questionnaires and the results are follows:
First, as for the degree of school violence experiences by the type of violence in middle school students, the most frequent type of violence was verbal and psychological violence, followed by physical violence, sexual violence, cyber-bullying, hate violence, and instrumental violence. Second, as for the differences in the peer and interpersonal relationships by gender, the boys were significantly better at the relationships with peers than the girls, and no significant difference was found in the relationships with parents or teachers by gender. Third, as for the differences in the experience of school violence by gender, the experience not only as a school violence victim but also as a school violence offender differed significantly by gender. Specifically, the boys were more likely to have the experience of being a school violence victim as well as of being a school violence offender than the girls. Fourth, as for the effects of the relationships with parents on the experience as a school violence victim, no sub-factor for the relationships with parents had statistically significant effects.
As for the effects of the relationships with peers on the experience as a school violence victim, peer delinquency had a significant impact. In other words, peer delinquency can affect the experience either as a school violence victim or as a school violence offender.
