The present paper focuses on the historical aspect of modern Chinese typography-specifically centering around print Chinese characters-with aims to analyze its foundational background and transformation process. Through a diachronic analysis on modern print Chinese characters, the paper provides a view on the origin and the current state of Chinese fonts displayed through computers.
The body of the paper consists of two major parts: the foundational background of modern Chinese typography and the transformation process of modern Chinese typography.
The societal background in which the modern Chinese typography has formed in may be analyzed in three different perspectives. (1) As woodblock printing slowly developed into movable type printing during ancient times, traditional print letters 楷體(kaiti), 宋體 (songti), 仿宋體(fangsongti) have formed, which has provided an example for modern print letters. (2) The introduction of modern typography from the west during the late 19th century to the early 20th century and the drastic increase of demand for publishing printing formed the modern idea of print letters and caused them to go through a significant transformation. (3) As western printouts and Latin typeface designs were introduced due to the economic opening, they were absorbed by the Chinese society. Consequently, the design of Chinese typefaces has begun to specialize as commercial art.
Modern Chinese typography has formed in earnest after the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912, with the history of the typography going through a changeover period in 1949 (the formation of People’s Republic of China ) and 1979 (Chinese economic reform). The present paper analyzes modern Chinese typography in three time periods: from 1912~1930s, 1949~1970s, and 1980 to present. From the transformation process of Chinese typography, various trends such as retroism, the combination of western and Chinese typeface designs, and the development of 美術字(meishuzi) are displayed. Digital designs of current Chinese typeface have replaced hand-carved designs in the hands of professional type designers, transforming traditional print letters to various fonts. The development of Chinese fonts in China has become active starting from the 2000s, and the developers of modern Chinese fonts are interested in digitizing the handwriting (calligraphy) and the traditional 書法(shufa). This his shows the traditional Chinese view of their typeface-which values not only the delivery of the text but also the appreciation of the typeface art-acting upon the modern society.
