This paper is a corpus-based study to provide a comprehensive account for the structures of complex sentences in English with focus on temporal clauses. Based on the data from COCA (the Corpus of Contemporary American English), the positioning of main and temporal adverbial clauses is examined from the perspective of semantics such as the Figure precedence principle, the sequence principle, and the end-focus principle. The results of this study have verified that the semantic factors are systematically combined and affect the structures of complex sentences with temporal clauses. Even the positioning of the temporal clauses that are not affected by the three principles can be explained by the semantic perspectives including the theoretical background of these principles.
