The purpose of this study is to find out meanings and values of the soundscape in the folk village and furthermore to analyze the relationship between soundscape and the living environment based on the soundscape point of view. The objective site was Naganeupseong, one of the representative Korean folk villages. Questionnaires composed of free answering form with 15 items were completed, and the interviews were conducted to the residents of the village. The results tell that the natural sounds such as birds’ chirping and the social sounds such as Gukak, Korean folk music primarily characterize the village. Due to the change of the natural and the living environment, the resources of sound environment related to nature, life, history, and tradition were shown to be gradually decreased. On the other hand, the change and new generation of sound environmental elements are reflecting the social phenomena such as the growth of tourists, agricultural machines, home hostelling, diverse performances/events, and various electronic devices. Sound environmental resources related to the natural and living environment are settled harmoniously in the memories of residents. The type, frequency, and distribution of the sound environmental elements are made decision on the natural and ecological environments, the specific character and the frequency of festival/events, personal/social activities, and the lifestyle of residents. The consciousness of the residents contain the messages on the village to their descendants; the identity, preservation, and succession of tradition and vitalization.
