Gwangju Metropolitan city has been devoted to maintaining greenspaces with the political vision of creating the ecopolis since 2000. However, activating citizen’s use, as well as securing the space, is important. In this study, at first, investigate the function and role of parks in Gwangju through the process of making a park, the distributional property of the parks, and the analysis of park users. Secondly, suggest some ideas to activate the park use. Concerning the process of developing parks, the most of parks were created after the 1980s, to satisfy criterion of park area. On that account, the distribution of the park is very similar to the spread of residential land development district. The wide range of undeveloped parks often appear in the center of Gwangju. These forest areas have been remained like green islands in city because of urbanization. Considering the natural traits of the park area, parks are divided into four different types: mountain, flat-land, river-side, and road-side type. The users’ behavior can be distinguished such as walking, picnicking, resting, exercising, social meeting. The use and the staying time in the park show many differences according to their age and group composition.
