“Towards Montezuma”:D. H. Lawrence and American Indian CivilizationJung-A Hwang (Ewha Womans U)D. H. Lawrence continually moved from one place to another through his life and wrote a large number of novels, essays, and travel books about them. Although all of these places served, each in its different way, as resources for his ideas and thoughts, America was of particular significance in regard to his life-long exploration of civilizations. From both personal experience and reading, Lawrence developed his own vision of America which centers on the idea that America is a historical place where modern European civilization finally comes to an end and a wholly new civilization emerges. Lawrence argues that European immigrants should turn to and embrace the “great aboriginal spirit” which “has been rejected and almost annihilated.” That is, he believes, the authentic way for them to live in America and it would ultimately lead them to “a surpassing of old European life-form” rather than an expansion or advancement of European civilization. Since this ‘surpassing’ involves looking back “towards Montezuma” and taking up “life where the Red Indians, the Aztec, the Maya, the Incas left it off”, American ‘Indian’ civilization played a crucial role in Lawrence’s thinking on America. With these in mind, I propose to examine how clearly distinguished Lawrence’s attitude toward ‘Indians’ (and their civilization) could be from typical ‘Eurocentric’ reponses, such as projecting oneself to them, measuring them with one’s own standards, mystifying them, and so on. I also compare Lawrence with some other thinkers who, sharing minority view of America’s constituent position in the modern history, attempt to illuminate creative ‘thought-adventures’ on the part of ‘Indian’ civilization.
