This paper examines the great tradition of English novel established by Emily Brontë and D. H. Lawrence. The close relationship between Lawrence's The Rainbow and Brontë's Wuthering Heights is studied for this. Two novels explore the vision of true and intrinsic human relationship on the unrealistic level, which is firmly rooted in the realistic dimension. By dialectically unifying unrealistic and realistic elements, two novelists make a deep and serious exploration into life. Their effective use of narrative structure enables them to present their vision concretely and persuasively. Lawrence uses visual images, free indirect discourse, and his own direct analysis in order to make the seemingly abstract inner conflict between characters real and concrete. Brontë has a perfect command of narrative structure of Nelly narrating to another narrator, Lockwood. Two narrators, representing common sense and reason, give a realistic foundation to the apparently supernatural and unconvincing bond between Catherine and Heathcliff. Lawrence directly presents his vision of true human relationship and his ultimate faith in creating a new world through Ursula. Ursula comes to realize that she ought to be true to the inner truth that Skrebensky is not a suitable match for her. In contrast, Brontë implies her vision of intrinsic human relationship indirectly through the tragic life of Catherine who betrays the inner truth that she and Heathcliff are fatally united. This study of the essential similarity of Lawrence and Brontë illuminates the great tradition of English novel in a new perspective. It leads to the true understanding of novel which creatively unifies the elements of unrealistic romance and realistic novel.
