The study of children’s literature of North Korea has been a little inactive because of lack of research materials resulted basically from antagonistic relationship between South Korea and North Korea. Consequently researchers as well as their articles on are not many until now. In South Korea ‘fantasy tales’ have gained in popularity after 1990s riding the crest of the ‘fantasy boom’ spreading all over the world. The purpose of the article is to reveal whether the boom was in North Korea or not. On the other hand, I consider the way fantasticality or fantasy boom exists and was represented in North Korean tales. I examined thoroughly its fantasticality dividing into three fields; plots of traditional tales, structures of dream stories and scientific fantasy tales. As a result I found that there were not fantasy tales but similar fantasy tales among North Korean tales and some of them have shown ‘fantasticality’ in spite of their doctrinaire features. The fact shows that children’s literature of North Korea was also based on the mind of a child. Many problems arisen from difference in ideology between South Korea and North Korea show that two sides need to do their best to close gaps in opinion taking ample times.
