Korean American artist Nam June Paik (1932〜2006) was first trained as a classical pianist, and later studied music composition and musicology as well as art history and aesthetics. While he was a member of Fluxus under the influence of John Cage and participated in a number of music performances, Paik is generally considered as a video artist and little research on him and his works has been conducted in the area of music. Similar to one's mother tongue, people use their own “languages” when dreaming, talking in their sleep, describing what they see, hear, smell and feel. From the numerous works of Paik I believe it is obvious that, regardless of the means or medium used in his works, his ultimate language was music. Rather than being a passive overview with limited consideration on Paik's musical trace, this paper covers a wide range of his works as those of a music composer who could utilize a variety of new media. Special attention will be paid to the role of music in his art; more specifically, his artistic sense and talent acquired through music education and training will become a key to re-evaluate the artistic value of his video artworks.
