Some modern Arab poets, especially the Tammūzian Poets employed mythical, biblical or Quranic places and figures in their works and used them as symbols for approaching their themes.
The dramatic symbols by the Tammūzian Poets were expressions for three main foci of their consciousness. First, the anxiety and restlessness of the Arab individual living in an unsettled and confused society. Therefore the poets gave expression to the great need for exploring new experiences. symbols denoting travel and the facing of the unknown, such as Odysseus and Sindbad were found appropriate to this theme, and were used frequently. Second, the idea of the rebirth and resurrection of a new healthy Arab personality, able to stand up to the challenges facing it. Here symbols such as Adonis, Phoenix, Osiris, Lazarus, Christ, Husayn, and many others were repeatedly used. Third, the sufferings of man in general and that of the modern Arab in particular, resulting from a perception of the wide gap between what was hoped for and what was achieved already. To elucidate this idea, symbolic personalities famous for experiencing suffering and pain, such as Christ, Husayn, Prometheus and Sisyphus, were seen to dominate in poetry.
In this thesis these all dramatic symbols will be analyzed by their themes, such as symbol of the past glory, symbol of the crime and fall, symbol of the relief, symbol of the trial, symbol of the denial and resistance, symbol of the surrender and defeat, and finally symbol of the resurrection.
Key Word: symbol of the past glory, symbol of the crime and fall, symbol of the relief, symbol of the trial, symbol of the denial and resistance, symbol of the surrender and defeat, symbol of the resurrection.
