The object of this study is to present legitimate logic of multiculturalism through examining preexisting theoretical controversy both on pro and contra sides. Although muticulturalism is very familiar concept even in the Korea society, there is no comprehensive agreement on the meaning of it. Multiculturalism is based on the inevitable cultural plurality in human society. The recognition that multi-cultural situation is inescapable in human society demands to develop an appropriate scheme, in which we are able to deal with it. As a cognitive framework, multiculturalism plays positive role in the democratic and diverse society under the globalization. Multiculturalism contributes to enhance equlity that is a core value of modern democracy. Based upon the value of equality, it promotes integration of residents of the society who have diverse background in terms of ethnic, language, and religion. Lastly, multiculturalism represents a deep concern about the inherent rights of human being, which are being advanced through reflection on the dark side of modernity, such as racism and ethnocentrism. This article suggests the legitimacy of multiculturalism, it is necessary to be opened to the continued critical examination, however. This will enrich the contents of it as for policy to cure the practical problem of the modern world.
