The Book of Margery Kemp defies generic categorization as some complex literary works do. Critical endeavors to define its generic slot have exhausted available medieval genres. Despite its tremendous popularity, however, exemplum has not been given due considerations in its genre studies. Familiar motifs of contemporary exempla underlie its narrative from the start. They are also strategic tools for Kempe to clothe dangerous ideas in the orthodox and popular form. Of all things, Kempe’s unique self-appellation endows her narrative with a contour of exemplum. The telltale deployment of the self-abasing appellation “creature,” which in lieu of the proper name ‘Margery’ endows a sense of passivity characteristic of the protagonists of medieval exempla. These all compose a giant exemplary tale of “creature” which is not limited to the person called Margery. It is under the harshest heresy persecution in the history of England that this generic maneuver and use of the third person appellation helps reduce her burden of responsibility for the sometimes dangerous text as well as suspicion of heresy.
