Journal of the International Network for Korean Language and Culture 15-3, 113-133. This paper aims to analyze the errors occurring during the acquisition of Korean monophthongs by Mongolian learners in terms of their internal vowels representations within the theoretical framework of Element Theory. When Korean monophthong input is given, Mongolian learners reanalyze and adjust it based on their internal representation of the Mongolian vowel system, as reflected in their output. Positive and negative transitions appear in this process. The commonality of the internal structures of /i, e, a, ə/ explains the positive transfer of these vowels by Mongolian speakers of Korean while substitution errors of [i] for /ɨ/, [u] or [ɔ] for /o/, and [o] for /u/. indicating negative transfer found in Mongolian learners’ pronunciation occur due to adaptation internal representations of Mongolian vowels to Korean.
