The purpose of this study is to examine changes in hair structure and compare differences in hair damage in accordance with the pH of permanent wave lotion and hair texture. For the purpose, this researcher classified the lotions into acidic, neutral and alkaline ones according to their pH values and hair types into fine straight, coarse straight, fine wavy and coarse wavy hairs according to their textures. Morphological changes in hair structure were examined through the FE-Scanning Electronic Microscope observation, Physical changes through measuring the degree of the Swelling, and chemical changes through investigation the hair samples with the High Speed Amino Acid Analyzer. Finding of the study showed that when permanent wave lotions were applied, fine hairs were more morphologically and physically changed than coarse hairs, indicating that the former hairs are more likely to be externally damaged than the latter. In addition, when such wave lotions were used, wavy hairs were more chemically damaged than straight hairs, indicating that the former hairs are more likely to be internally damaged than latter. The 4 types of hairs were all little damaged by acidic permanent wave lotions. In contrast, even alkaline permanent wave lotions were applied just once, all hairs were damaged. Such damages were more and more developed as the alkaline agents were repeatedly applied.
