Humanistic education has been approached and developed from various perspectives. This article aims to look to the significance of humanistic education and theories giving grounds to the education to review whether they include the concept of death. Humanistic education is based on human beings and hence the problem of life and death is indispensable for the education. Humanistic education has been promoted focusing on practices without thorough consideration on its definition and conceptual approach. The concept itself caused problems and confusion from its ambiguity. This conceptual ambiguity of humanistic education comes from the ambiguity of the Korean word ('in-seong') for humanity. This word have been corresponded to English words 'personality', 'character', and 'humanity' resulting in various prospectives and definition on humanity education. Moreover, the words 'personality' and 'character' are also used in mixed ways. From the various meanings of humanity in the humanity education, one common concept can be extracted : 'person(人格) building'. This common concept could be a start point of reviewing the concept of humanity education. The article reviewed the concept of 'person' based on the concept of 'person' in the modern philosophy. Through the modern philosophy, 'person' become closely related to body and to death by extension. Human being dies in the course of nature. Therefore, death can provide some grounds and theoretical basis for humanity education. Max Scheler's consideration on the principal meaning of death will have a significance through the process of understanding death as a ground for humanity education.
