This study investigated the effects of ‘ARCS strategy using newspapers’ on middle schoolstudents’ academic achievement, science related attitude and science learning motivation. Six classesof 184 students in the 2nd grade participated in this study. The experimental group, consisted of 3classes, was taught with the instruction method of ‘ARCS model using NIE’, while the control groupof other 3 classes was taught with the traditional instruction method. The experimental group usedthe newspapers related to the respiration and excretion unit in order to arose students' Attention,Relevance, Confidence and Satisfaction. The study results indicated that the instruction method of‘ARCS strategy using newspapers’ was more effective in improving students' science academicachievement, attitude toward science, as well as science learning motivation compared to thetraditional instruction method. More specifically, the experimental group students represented thestatistically higher scores on all of the four motive elements (Attention, Relevance, Confidence andSatisfaction), compared to the control group students. Finally, students perceived that the instructionof ‘ARCS model using NIE’ aroused interest in science class, attracted active participationand helped to acquire science knowledge.
