This study aims to explore the research trend on group activities during science learning and review the cumulated research from the beginning up until 2015. Empirical research on group activity was collected through online database searching method. 179 articles were selected, and these articles used at least one of these words including ‘group’, ‘peer’, ‘cooperative’, ‘collaborative’ in Korean as well as English where their title, abstract, or keywords sections. These literatures were divided into four research types; ‘Group Description’, ‘Participants Survey’, ‘Lesson Description’, and ‘Group Related’ based on the main goal of an article. The criteria for research trends were three-fold; research findings on group characteristics, research method for analyzing group activity, and teaching-learning strategies for educational treatment. As the data showed, the number of research on group activity was increasing, and recent increased numbers of articles were from the ‘Group Description’ research area. The most frequently used method was pre-post questionnaire with focus group interview. Recently, however, semiotic analysis using various analytical units was increasing and quantitative approach was decreasing at the same time. Lastly, major teaching-learning strategies were not belonged to the cooperative learning. It was interpreted that science educators has been widely adopting the advantages from group activities and trying to increase the chance to discover the complex characteristics of group phenomena on school science lessons. Several reflections on group activities will be considered in this study.
