As a first step to building a describing system for the representational style of photographic images based on affective evaluation, the relationship between techniques inferred from visual properties and aesthetic impressions of observers was examined. Professional photographers evaluated the techniques based on visualized effects such as form, depth, motion, and color. The aesthetic impression of photographic images were collected in the form of affective words from novices. Data derived from professional assessment indicated that positive statistical correlation existed among clearness of contour, depth of field, and diffuseness of lighting. Techniques involving color were significantly correlated with the position of the main-subject, clearness of contour, shutter speed, and diffuseness of lighting. Strong correlation was also found to exist between color saturation and color contrast. These results imply that visual effects of photographic taking-techniques are not perfectly independent. A regression analysis of the collected affective response was undertaken in order to find out the relationship between picture taking techniques and affections. According to the results of this analysis, six affections - strong, calm, cool, dynamic, lonely, and cheerful- were significantly associated with photographic techniques. The size of the main-subject was found to be relatively small in images inducing calm and lonely feelings, and the location of the camera was linked to dynamic and cheerful emotions. These results demonstrate that similar affections such as ‘calm’-’lonely’ and ‘dynamic’-’cheerful’are related with the operations of the same technique. It further suggests that systematic classification of different responsive affections is necessary.
