Park, S.T., Uom, W.S., Jung, D.J. Effect of uphill and downhill walking with and without hiking stick on serum creatine kinase activity and myoglobin concentration. Exercise Science, 17(2): 151-156, 2008. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of walking type and hiking stick on serum creatine kinase activity and myoglobin concentration. The subjects were 14 college students who were divided into uphill walking(UW) group(n=7) and downhill walking(DW) group(n=7). They were asked to walk for 45 minute, at ±25% grade separately. Blood sampling was done at rest, immediately after exercise, 2 hours, 24 hours after exercise. We obtained the results as follows. First, regardless of using the hiking stick, a significant changes were not observed in the uphill walking group. In the downhill walking trial without hiking stick, a significant increase of serum CK activity was observed in the 24 hour after exercise and serum Mb concentration was increased for all the time after exercise. In the downhill walking trial with hiking stick, a significant increase of serum CK activity was not observed in the 24 hour after exercise. Serum Mb concentration was not significantly increased from 2 hour after exercise. In conclusion, the proper use of hiking stick during downhill walking caused reduction in the muscle damage owing to repetitive eccentric muscle contraction.
