Religion has always played an important role in Spain, and especially during Counter-Reformation the Catholic Church's presence could be felt in every aspect of communal life. In the face of economic difficulties in the sixteenth-and seventeenth-century, saints became objects of intense religious fervor, venerated for their perceived ability to perform miracles and help combat worldly adversities as an advocate for those who prayed to them for succor. During this period, the cult of saints flourished as a major expression of Catholic doctrine and of popular piety. Cult of saints originally set out to honor the martyrs, sacrificed for their religious beliefs, then became a doctrinal device for infusing the faithful with Christian ideals. But from the very beginning, veneration was mixed with supplication. Through a look at the various facets and manifestations of the cult of saints-shrines, relics, images, vows, brotherhoods, hagiographies-we hope to offer a glimpse into and understanding of, on the one hand, values promoted and deemed important by the Catholic Church, and on the other hand, what the lay people perceived to be the role of the saints in their daily lives.
