The conversion of Clovis is a watershed in European history. Before he was baptized into Catholicism, most Germanic rulers believed in Arianism and persecuted Gallo-Romans who believed in Catholicism. If he didn't get Catholicism, the main religion of Europeans would have been Arianism. Moreover the conversion made possible not only close cooperation between Gallo-Romans and Franks but also a real amalgamation of two peoples. Because of this cooperation and amalgamation European civilization could preserve Roman heritage.
So far studies on the cause of the conversion didn't pay deserved attention to religious factors. It is an inevitable phenomenon because studies on the cult of the saints which took the most important role in the religious life of Gallo-Romans in 5~6th century are deficient.
Since 1980s studies on the cult of the saints are progressed actively. Particularly Peter Brown argues that the cult of the saints is not a superstitious belief of the vulgar but the focal point of religious life in 5~6th century that made possible the concord and unification of Gallo-Romans. And Raymond V. Dam enlarged our knowledge on the cult of saints in late antique Gaul. He suggests that the cult of S. Martinus provide a general paradigm of the development of saints' cult through late antique Gaul.
Indebted to recent studies on the cult of the saints, I suggest the cult of Martinus played an important role in the conversion of Clovis. In 498 Clovis made a military expedition to Bordeaux. On return he visited Tour. For at that time the festival of Saint Martinus was held. Moved by strong impression at this festival Clovis summoned all bishops of Gaul to Rheims to receive baptism.
Clovis' conversion ended the rule of Arianism and opened new age for western History. Even before Clovis' conversion Germans and Gallo-Romans collaborated on the whole. But sometimes there were intense conflicts between Germans and Gallo-Romans. In particular Germanic rulers who believed in Arianism persecuted Gallo-Romans. But Clovis' conversion made possible the real amalgamation of two peoples. Due to this amalgamation the transformation of the period proceeded peacefully and continuously.
We must notice the cult of the saints contributed greatly to unite peoples who had different origins and status. Whole people could participate in the feasts of the saints without distinction. They felt a strong sense of unity at the ceremony. Without the cult of the saints, Franks could not have reconciled with Gallo-Romans. Perceiving the force of the cult of the saints, Clovis took Catholic baptism, and contributed the amalgamation of two peoples.
